How to Stand Out as a Competitive Medical School Applicant

Join Dr. Sahil Mehta, a vascular & interventional radiologist at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center, as well as the founder of MedSchoolCoach. After this session, you’ll be able to answer:

  • What’s the difference between applying to Texas medical schools through TMDSAS vs. the AMCAS application accepted elsewhere?
  • What extracurriculars do I need tied to research, clinical work, shadowing, volunteering, and leadership.
  • Beyond solid grades and a strong MCAT score, what can I do to differentiate myself from the crowd to get accepted into med school?

There will also be Live Q&A, so come prepared to ask plenty of questions related to the journey toward becoming a physician.

Join Madison Sweitzer as she walks you through how students get involved with Global Medical Brigades and volunteer internationally to get hands on medical experience. By attending this sessions, you’ll be able to:

  • Learn how you can assisting with triage, taking vitals from real patients, and shadow doctors during patient consultations.
  • Identify opportunities to inspire and collaborate with communities to help achieve their health and economic goals.
  • Join a program for a unique opportunity to travel, work alongside real physicians, and add extracurricular experiences to your application.

Get Hands-On: Join a Suture Workshop with the U.S. Army

Join Major Eric Doe of the United States Army as he explores wound repair principles and techniques. The workshop covers instrument basics such as suture types and selection, proper loading of the needle, aftercare, and documentation.

All supplies will be provided for the workshop.

Major Doe is officer-in-charge of the 5th Medical Recruiting Battalion in San Antonio, Texas. The battalion recruits health care professionals to maintain the future of military medicine. He also served in the 7225th Medical Support Unit and as Chief Medical Operations Officer for Special Operations Command South.

Dr. Sahil Mehta is a board-certified Interventional Radiologist, specializing in minimally invasive treatments. He practices at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center and is on faculty at Harvard Medical School. He is also the founder of MedSchoolCoach, helping future physicians realize their dream of becoming a doctor.

Madison joined Global Brigades in 2021. She graduated magna cum laude from the University of Richmond in 2019, where she studied Global Studies with a concentration in Development and Latin American, Latinx, and Iberian Studies. While at UR, she also spent a semester studying abroad in Buenos Aires, Argentina at Universidad Católica de Argentina.

Selena is a medical student at UT Health San Antonio Long School of Medicine. Selena scored in the 95th percentile in Psych/Soc and 99th percentile in CARS on her MCAT, and she has over 10 years of teaching and tutoring experience.
Sakif Islam
Sakif Islam UT Austin, AMSA
Sakif is a senior at the University of Texas at Austin majoring in Biochemistry on a pre-medical track. Additionally, he is pursuing certificates in Computer Science and Pre-Health Professions. He is also President of the AMSA chapter on campus.

Attend as many or as few seminars, presentations, and interactive workshops as you wish. You can come and go as you need to. However, as an elite event for future physicians, we wouldn't recommend you miss a single minute!

Yes! While it is a live event, we will have a videographer on site. The videos will take a few weeks to edit and process, and then they will be posted.

Yes! The Mini Pre-Med Conference will be completely free for AMSA students attending The University of Texas at Austin. The purpose of this event is to provide information to all prospective doctors the help grow the profession.
